Is Procrastination - An Energy Drain?

Do you suffer from that dreaded and greatly feared word - procrastination? Does it drain your energy, worry or haunt you? Do you have a pile of things that you just cant get to or a “to-do’  list longer than your teenager’s telephone bill?

What is procrastination?

Procrastinating gets such a bad rap in our ultra high achieving, fast moving society, especially now that it seems everyone is an expert in the Law of Attraction.  Many people do get “instant” results when they start using law of attraction principles and there are many more who just get frustrated.

But when we study the “over night success stories” we find out, that it can take these experts 20-30 years of focused work and dedication, many mistakes  and some big lessons and course corrections, before the “tipping point” into success.

A dictionary definition and origin of the word, procrastination:

Delay or postpone action; put off doing something

origin: late 16th Century- latin - Procrastinate - deferred till tomorrow

verb: procrastinare   pro = forward + crastinare = belonging to Tomorrow

From the dictionary origin - deferred or belonging to tomorrow.

Instead of “beating” ourselves up with a huge “procrastination is bad” stick, how about a simple reframe, gaining a different perspective and considering that maybe a particular activity is meant for TOMORROW!

Why do you procrastinate?

Many people actually delay in doing an activity due to fear of either success or failure, perfectionism or they just don’t know HOW  to go about the task. Sometimes it is because they need more information, some training, coaching or it is something that should just be delegated.

Consider which of these reasons would solve your procrastination issues and then act by getting more information, delegating it or allowing your intuition to guide you to the right time to do it, because the worst thing about procrastinating is the negative self talk, worry and mind chatter that goes on around -  not doing it. The negative feelings do more damage than simply not doing the job.

How do you procrastinate?

I am ashamed and proud to share with you a poem that I wrote in 1991 about procrastination. I felt so bad about the procrastinating I was experiencing while I was creating my original weekend workshop called Creative Living, that I wrote this to express my frustration and to reframe the whole experience.

Why? I realized just how much was getting done in other areas whilst I was procrastinating.

A Poem by Barbara from 1991:

I’m the Avoid-Dancer

I dance around pretending to be busy

Looking so important and feeling so prissy

But I’m really quite confused and most agitated

I can’t sit down long enough to get myself motivated.

To even start the project I so deeply desire,

Instead I create my own inner burning fire…..

And dance the avoid-dance.

I dance to the kitchen and then to the phone,

No –one knows that I’m here all on my own!

I do my dance around the washing machine

And everything I see I scrub perfectly clean.

I make the beds, I clean the floors,

I scrub the ceilings and wash the doors.

This is my avoid-dance…….. What’s yours?

Can you relate to this? To give your procrastination activities a name and a character is very helpful especially if you start to become amused by what you do, releasing the tension, blame and guilt is better for your mind and energy levels than the negative emotions.

Nowadays, I still procrastinate, but because I call it my avoid dancer and I now trust my inner guidance, I find that it is OK, and it always works out better than I expect.

Is there any benefit in procrastinating?

You tell me, if you can think of any opportunities now, when you look back on things you procrastinated about. I find that when I am stuck and I “let go” with out giving up, I get greater insights or a faster more efficient way to do the job, or someone shows up to do it for me.  Sometimes I find, it is just the thrill of the 11th hour, burning the midnight oil adrenaline rush to get a project done on time.

What opportunities have you discovered in your procrastination?

If nothing else, give it a name and character to disassociate yourself from it, and to give yourself some good energy around it.

You may find the job will get done easier and quicker when you are feeling better about it.  Let me know how you go!
